Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a nonionic, water-soluble polymer that can thicken, suspend, bind, emulsify, form films, stabilize, disperse, retain water, and provide protective colloid action. It is readily soluble in hot or cold water and can be used to prepare solutions with a wide range of viscosities.The coatings industry in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan is mature and generally reflects the health of the economy, especially housing, construction, and transportation. Most of the market growth is driven by China and India because the technology of local manufacturers is still immature. During the forecast period, consumption in the Middle East will also grow moderately. Compared to other celluloses such as CMC, the HEC market is highly concentrated and the CMC market is relatively fragmented. Ashland, Shin-Etsu Chemical and Dow Chemical are considered to be the three main players in the industry, accounting for 74% of the market. The HEC industry is an oligopoly, that is, a market with a very limited number of producers, a result of the high market entry barriers of high capital costs and the time-consuming and expensive process of product specification for final usage. But a worrying phenomenon is that there are many new players in China who are planning to enter this market. Currently, there are many small HEC manufacturers in China, but most of them have a production capacity of no more than 2,000 tons. Cellulose ethers function as stabilizers, thickeners, and viscosity modifiers in many industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, oil field chemicals, construction, paper, adhesives, and textiles. In select applications, they compete with each other and with synthetic water-soluble polymers (polyvinyl alcohol, polyurethane associative thickeners, polyacrylates) and natural water-soluble polymers (xanthan gum, carrageenan, locust bean gum). The choice of polymer is determined by price/performance trade-offs, availability, and ease of product reformulation based on price/performance considerations.
